Interest in the Human Body
Young children become interested in the exterior of the body before the interior. However, before early childhood comes to an end, most young children have an absorbing interest in the interiors of their bodies and want to know not only where their hearts, lungs, brains, etc., are but also what they do. They are also curious about elimination and where the products coming from their bodies originated.
When young children recognize anatomical differences between boys and girls, men and women, they want to know what these differences mean and what causes them. They are curious about germs, how they cause the body to become sick, and how medicine can drive the germs out of the body and make the person well. When a person dies, young children are curious about the body and how it gets to heaven.
Young children express their interest in the body by commenting on the various parts and by asking questions about them. As this is usually not enough to satisfy their curiosity, they examine different parts of their bodies and the bodies of their play mates. Nothing fascinates them more than the processes of elimination, which they watch with curiosity whenever they go to the toilet.
